My exact “good enough” file system and how to set it up fast
May 7, 2026

Files don’t need to be perfect, just findable. Here’s the system I actually use.
You don’t need a complicated file system. You need one you’ll actually maintain. Simple beats perfect. A few main folders. A few subfolders. Everything else is browsable.
My system works because it matches how I think about my files. Year, category, done. I can find anything in seconds. I don’t have to remember a complex structure. It just works because it’s simple enough to sustain.
I wrote about this on Substack with the exact folder structure I use and why it works.
