From the outside Claire Ridgeway looks like she has it all —a handsome, successful husband, three young, healthy daughters, a beautiful home in Toronto and a cottage in Lake Country. But Claire knows there are fissures in her marriage that could threaten everything. Even so, she’s shocked when Kirk announces he’s in love with another woman. Turns out his late nights at work have been spent wining and dining this other woman.
Shattered by Kirk’s revelation, Claire is sure her marriage is over and when Kirk suggests counselling she wonders if there’s any point. But with so much at stake, shouldn’t she at least try? Not just for her and Kirk’s sake, but for their daughters…and the fourth child Kirk doesn’t even know she’s expecting. (marriage in jeopardy, romance series, pregnant heroine, baby, family life, women's fiction, family drama)
This was such a nice, heartfelt read. Sometimes you just want a story that feels grounded in everyday struggles, with characters who could be your neighbors or friends. That’s exactly what I got here. The Fourth Child tackles family, love, and the tough choices we make, and it does so with warmth and authenticity.
One of the things I enjoyed most was how Carmichael keeps the story approachable. There’s no over-the-top drama—just real people trying to navigate complicated family dynamics. I found myself caring about the characters quickly, especially the ways they were juggling responsibilities, personal desires, and the sometimes messy realities of life.
While the romance is gentle, it’s also steady and believable. There’s a sweetness to it that complements the family-driven storyline rather than overshadowing it. And honestly, that balance worked really well for me. It’s the kind of book you can curl up with on a quiet evening and feel like you’ve spent time in a world that’s warm and comforting, even when conflicts arise.
It may not be the flashiest story, but it left me smiling and thoughtful—which is exactly why I’d recommend it.
🔥 Steamometer: 2/5 – Light and sweet, with just enough romantic spark to add warmth.
